While ordering flowers online seems easy, it’s often fraught with peril.

Stop Using Online Florists.

In the past few years, two people have sent me flower bouquets that were never delivered. The online florist makes all sorts of promises to deliver the next day or within the next few days — only to find out there was no delivery. They call again to say, “no flowers were delivered,” and face another set of excuses. I wonder how much this happens. How many times do people order flowers thinking they were delivered and their recipient never gets them.

This brings up another point; people frequently don’t thank someone for a gift. That is such a shame. A nice thank you note is an art in itself, and can help extend the pleasure of a gift. Even a text or phone call, while not as nice, is still better than wondering if your gift was received.

Please understand that I am not saying all florists are bad. There are two in my home town of Hannibal, Missouri, that are wonderful. I am simply suggesting you not use online florists like 800 Flowers or some generic service that makes delivery arrangements for you. They are too unreliable.

After complaining, I think it’s only fair to also provide a solution. Find a real florist at a nearby location and order directly from that local florist. Say your mom lives in Enumclaw, Washington. Google florists in Enumclaw, Washington and find one that appeals to you. You can even find their location on Google Maps and find a florist close to mom’s house to save a little on delivery fees too. When you order flowers this way, you’ll save money, save time and your bouquet will really get delivered.

Who knows, over time, that florist may come to know you, your preferences and you can build a little online or phone friendship with the florist. They can tell you what flowers they have and even offer suggestions.
